Words from CRC Executive Director
Welcome graduates and congratulations to the class of 2012.
Take a look around. All your family and friends are here today to celebrate in your success. We're all looking at you with pride in our eyes and in our hearts. Because we all know how hard it was to make this happen. And you needed a lot of help to reach this point. So take a moment to think about how you got here. Think about who you are. Many of you are first or second-generation Cambodians. But the journey for this graduating class came long before you were born.
My wife and I ran from a city under siege by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. We dodged bullets and bombs. We were both scared and frightened for our lives. We lost everything in Cambodia. Just like thousands of other families after the Pol Pot regime took over. We decided to come to America in search for a better life, the American dream. For a lot of Cambodian families that starts with owning their own business, like a donut shop. And their road to success wasn't easy. Without education, they had to rely on business sense and manual labor. It meant a lot of sacrifice so that their children could sit here like you are sitting today. They're no doubt filled with pride to see you here right now. But pride cannot get you a job. It cannot put food on the table. It cannot pay the rent. But what if you add education? Education cannot get you a job, put food on the table or pay the rent. But what if you add in determination? Now you're cooking. It takes determination to do hard work. It takes education to prove yourself. And it takes pride in yourself to push on. Because you won't always succeed in everything you do. But failures are only practice for success. It is important to never give up. Your family did not. That is why they are sitting here today.
Imagine if they gave up before crossing the Mekong River and the thousands of more miles it took to get here. Imagine if they gave up atfer going through the genocide, a war, famine and poverty. They are the ultimate survivors. Now it's your time to be the ultimate thrivers. Even though it seems your struggles are nothing like what your elders went through... it's all a part of our history. You are now a part of that history. Our Cambodian history is one of sadness and struggle, richness and beauty. And right now, you are the brightest spot. It's up to you to decide what will happen to our legacy. It seems like a lot of pressure for a new graduate. But pressure creates diamonds. So go out there and shine for us.
And most of all, remember where you come from.

- United State of America: Congressional office of Jim Costa
- Mayor of Fresno Ashley Swearengin
- Fresno Center New America
Mr. Alex Yang's Speech:
I am stand before you, I can validly tell you my nightmare and horrified story of my childhood. I was separated from my parents as orphans with my brother at the age of 9 but he never made it thru. I am a refugee from Southeast Asia, I am Cambodian. By the end of Pol Pot regime I was able to reunite with my mom and we escaping from Pol Pot in 1979 during the current government come to power. By 1980 we arrived to United States, which has given me a chance and chance of a new life. I was happy, confused, and scared the same time. The new world was so much different, so much to offers, and so much choices. We are here today to celebrate "Reaching the American dreams". Have I reach the American dreams? Maybe, then again maybe not, depend our definition of American dreams. To reach this point of our life, we come from different roads and different path. But the road that lead us to this point comes from two commitment "choice and determination". Why do I say this because we were refugee, poor, and culture shock- compare to fish out of water. With our determination and making the right choice, we push ourselves so we can here today. It is been said that "the choice we make, will define who we are". So Reaching the American dreams is my saying "Being the person you dream to Be." So keep in mind to make the right choice.
